When I first started out as a hypnotist I was ready to save the world. I figured once people understood how powerful hypnosis was, they'd be lining up to see me. In fact, I had tons of people say, "When you get certified, please let me know. I'll be your first client!" Yet, I soon discovered that those same people meant that I could practice on them for free for as long as I'd like...

I struggled financially for a long time trying to build a practice. I talked everywhere, passed out lots of flyers and business cards, and attended all kinds of program and hypnosis seminars where the trainer pumped me up with the "you can do it" speech. But in the end, I found myself exhausted and worrying how I was going to pay my rent.

I tried all kinds of business plans and get rich schemes trying to make my dreams a reality. When I heard of hypnotists who were seeing 60-100 clients per week and making 6 figures it just made me feel more insecure and overwhelmed. Yet, as all people who eventually reach their dreams do, I kept on pursuing mine.

After many years of spending time, energy, and money, I finally found a system that provided me exactly what I was looking for. I got the right kind of business model for a hypnotist. I found a coach who fine-tuned my skills and helped me to stop sabotaging myself, and I joined a network of other great hypnotists who were making a difference and making a great living at the same time!

Now I am one of those hypnotists who sees roughly 250 clients per month and I earn a very good income. I also set my own hours and everyday I get to see people go from breakdowns to breakthroughs! As I get older, I'm realizing that the world needs more well-trained hypnotists than ever before. I used to tenaciously protect these guarded secrets I had learned because I didn't want to create "competition." It appears the laws regarding hypnotism are about to change once more July 1^st, 2010. As long as nothing new happens, all the current laws that require hypnotists to maintain state certification will be null and void. People wanting to become hypnotists are no longer required to have 500 hours of hypnotism training nor do they have to sit for the poorly written and designed Hypnotism Exam. Hypnotism schools in Indiana are still required to be approved through ICOPE to provide hypnotism education.

Hypnotists are still expected to have at least 100 hours of hypnotism training by an approved school and/or trainer and they are still bound by the same ethics and standards as other professions, such as psychologists and social workers.

HAI's view is mixed. On the one hand, we are happy to see that the government is getting out of the hypnotism business. The hypnotism committee did a very poor job while in existence and the hypnotism exam was a nightmare. We do give a huge thumbs up to all those diligent professionals who jumped through the various hoops and actually passed the hypnotism exam. You are the ones who kept the profession alive in Indiana for the past decade! Thank you.

On the other hand, it also opens the state back up to just about anyone taking a weekend course and then calling themselves a hypnotist. Hypnotists are experts in language skills, communication, and influence. If you are going to call yourself such, you better be able to back it up.

HAI also has a strong desire to keep the profession professional. There are so many stereotypes out there already about hypnosis that part of your job as a hypnotist is to re-educate the public on the numerous mental, emotional, and physical benefits of our field. Simultaneously calling yourself a hypnotist and psychic or soul translator is only going to further the myths that hypnotists are a bunch of con men or weirdo's who embarrass people on stage. If you have other valid skills, that's great. Just keep them separate and you will discover far greater success.

Finally, HAI has a strong desire to help hypnotists become fiscally and financially sound. Being a broke, struggling hypnotist is not going to help you or your clients. People need strong, confident, and competent role models more than ever and you can provide that for them with the right training, coaching, and business model.
